It is a priority of Tanzanian government to improve access to obstetric care in the country’s Kigoma Region. In support of this goal, it is the objective of this project to map the road networks that residents use to reach these facilities. We have identified the mapping of residential areas as a crucial first step in what will be ongoing work to increase the coverage and quality of Kigoma Region’s road network, and would like to ask for your help in this endeavor.

The overall objective of our work is fill in the gaps that exist in current maps of Kigoma Region’s road network, which make estimation of travel time to obstetric care facilities difficult. Tackling this objective in phases, the first phase of mapping - of which this project is the centerpiece - is aimed at identifying as many previously unmapped residential areas as possible. Following this phase, we would like to map more of the roads connecting these residential areas to obstetric care facilities, as well as roads within residential areas and waterways, which can pose seasonal barrier to travel. For a broader description of our aims, as well as details on how to create an OpenStreetMap account to contribute to our work, please see our background document.
If you are interested in getting involved with this project, please see the following tracing guides for step-by-step instructions on how to digitize and tag the residential areas within Kigoma. For new mappers, we have a guide to Potlatch 2 - a tool that runs directly in most browsers, and is very straightforward to use. For more experienced mappers, or beginners who would like to learn how to use an open source mapping tool with more advanced features, we also offer a JOSM tracing guide.
